In 2012, Kenya Electricity Generating Company moved to acquire over 3000 acres of land in Naivasha for geothermal exploration.

The sale of the LR 8398/2 land at a cost of Sh505 million was in 2020 termed irregular by the Nakuru County Government committee report, that was formed to look into the land purchase.

KenGen said the sale of the land was above board.

However, the committee’s report showed that KenGen failed to adhere to procurement rules and obtaining the land without the knowledge of the members.

‘There was no public participation before the sale of the land’.

KenGen disputed this by stating that they got a go-ahead from the landowners through a minute from a meeting.

“We wrote to the chairman of Ng’ati in 2012 seeking to purchase a parcel of their land and after following the laid down procedures, including getting minutes from the members, this process was approved,” KenGen stated.

The ‘fraudulent purchase of land lies squarely on the shoulders of three KenGen senior managers namely, Jennifer Oduor, Jane Mbogo and Cornelius Letei.

Despite terming the deal clean, the chairman of the Ng’ati farmers Mr Patrick Karanja could not explain why some Sh200 million from the land sale was not accounted for.

According to reports, the money was shared among some KenGen senior managers and Ng’ati Farmers’ Co-operative bosses.

Sacco members claimed that the Sh500 million land sale deal between the sacco and KenGen was “shrouded in secrecy and dishonesty” because their leaders did not consult them.

The case has moved back and forth and is still unresolved to date.

“We have been waiting for the government to solve this issue, but we are just being threatened to silence”, a member of the sacco told a local blogger.

Some farmers were given Sh415,000 but effused to take the money suspecting something fishy was going on and thus investigations started.

‘It is clear some fraud took place, yet the DCI and EACC have never gotten to the bottom of this matter, even as evidence points to Jennifer Oduor, Jane Mbogo and Cornelius Letei and some Ng’ati farmers Sacco managers as being responsible’.

Why haven’t they been arrested and questioned?
